How to choose an escape room without making a mistake

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

An escape room can be the highlight of a birthday or team event, or a forgettable hour spent staring at a padlock you can't open. The difference comes down to choosing the right room for your group. Age, occasion, group size, and experience level all matter — and the wrong combination can ruin even the best storyline.

The first thing to check is the age recommendation. Most rooms are designed for specific age ranges (5+, 8+, 14+, 16+, 17+). These aren't suggestions — younger participants often won't enjoy the puzzles or won't be allowed inside. For children's birthdays, look for rooms specifically built for kids, like Aqualand. For teenagers, mid-difficulty rooms with strong storylines work best.

The second factor is difficulty. Beginner rooms have fewer simultaneous puzzles and a more guided experience — perfect if your group has never tried an escape room before. Expert rooms are dense with multi-room puzzles and complex mechanics. If you mix experienced players with first-timers, choose something in the middle.

Finally, think about what kind of experience you want. Some rooms are theatrical with live actors and special effects, others are pure logic puzzles, and some are physical and active. The theme and pace should match what your group enjoys. A group of analytical thinkers will love The Cube and the Teleport. A group looking for thrills will prefer Ghost Hunters or TV Trap.
